Terminal Services Apps to Host. Apps Not to Host - Part 11
With all the features discussed to this point in this series, you would think that Terminal Services is a solution for all the applications in your environment. Just move every application over to your TS servers, and your problems are resolved. Users can access applications from anywhere, they do so with the same profile information, and you never need to waste time installing applications locally.

Introduction to Microsoft Terminal Services (TS) Gateway Certificates
A TS Gateway certificate is used for authentication and secure communication purposes by the TS clients. To appreciate the purpose of TS Gateway certificates, you will need to understand SSL communication.

The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) Explained
The Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is the protocol that drives Terminal Services. RDP is based on and is an extension of the T.120 protocol family of standards. It is a multichannel-capable protocol that allows for separate virtual channels for carrying device communication and presentation data from the server, as well as encrypted client mouse and keyboard data. RDP provides a very extensible base from which to build many additional capabilities, supporting up to 64,000 separate channels for data transmission as well as provisions for multipoint transmission.

Terminal Services Part 9: Licenses: Domain, Forest, or Workgroup?
And yet we're not done yet with the decisions we need to make about our Terminal Services licenses. The Per User versus Per Device question is only one of the architectural questions that you need to answer before ever installing any software.

At WinHEC 2008 Microsoft Discusses Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services) and Calista
Hi, Tad Brockway here. I am a Product Unit Manager on the Windows Server team. My team is focused on rich media remoting technologies for the new Remote Desktop Services (RDS) in Windows Server which we announced last week at ITForum EMEA in Barcelona. I just returned from WinHEC 2008 in Los Angeles where we showed a demo of some of the new rich media capabilities of RDS as well as a technology preview of what the Calista team has been working on since the company was acquired by Microsoft earlier this year.

Terminal Services Part 8: Licensing - Per User or Per Device?
Later on in Parts 22 through 24 I'll talk more about the actual installation and configuration of licenses for your Terminal Servers. However, at this point it is important to know that extra licensing will be required for you to use Terminal Services in your environment. These extra Terminal Server Client Access Licenses - or TSCALs for short - are required by each user or device that connects to your Terminal Server.

What's in Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Services
Windows Server 2008 R2 could be considered "Windows Server 7". A lot is happening to Terminal Services. One big change is cosmetic: Terminal Server will be renamed to Remote Desktop Services. Several other changes are most definitely technical ones. Let's take a look at the biggest changes.

Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services Gateway Explained
Another new feature of Windows Server 2008 is Terminal Services Gateway (or TS Gateway), which is designed to provide authorized users with secure, encrypted access over the Internet to terminal servers on your internal corpnet. In other words, a salesperson arriving at a hotel in Hong Kong could open his Windows Vista laptop to bring it out of sleep mode, connect to the Internet using a hot spot in the lobby, and launch a RemoteApp program on his machine that actually runs far away on a Terminal Server hidden behind your company's perimeter firewall at headquarters in New York.

Microsoft Adds "Remote Desktop via RDP Capabilities" to Live Mesh - Very Cool
The Remote Desktop Protocol is an efficient and feature-rich protocol which we have invested in greatly over the years. As such, we've worked to make RDP available not just in traditional Terminal Server scenarios, but also as a platform for additional products from Microsoft and third party ISV's. We are seeing the benefits of this work in very cool products like the Live Mesh Remote Desktop, which we developed with one of our partner teams. This service was just released to public Beta during Microsoft's PDC, and in this post we'll walk you through how it is used.

Terminal Services Part 6: Determining Anticipated User Load – By Greg Shields
At the same time as determining the applications you wish to host in your Terminal Services environment, your planning process should also include an analysis of the number of concurrent users you expect to be able to host on a single server. Lacking formal testing software, this process for the small environment is often as much "guess-and-check" as formal procedure. Since this series is designed with the small environment - and their available resources - in mind, let's analyze how you can do this with one tool you have available today: PerfMon.

Terminal Services Part 5: When to Use and Not Use Terminal Services - By Greg Shields
When considering leveraging Terminal Services in your environment, there are a number of situations in which its use makes sense. There are also a number of situations where hosting applications atop Terminal Services will actually reduce their performance.

Windows Terminal Services Part 4: Introducing the Five Role Services - By Greg Shields
Installing the Terminal Services role in Server 2008 by default nets you...well...nothing. As with virtually all roles in Windows Server 2008, the role itself only identifies "something the server desires to be." All the functionality that makes up that role is contained within its role services.

Microsoft Terminal Services Part 3: The RDC Client - By: Greg Shields
Along with the two server-side parts talked about in Part 2, there is a third component of Terminal Services that is required at the client side. The Remote Desktop Client or RDC is a necessary tool to be used at every client to connect to a Terminal Server.
