Configure Microsoft's RemoteApp for Terminal Services
Web apps are getting better and better these days. In fact, some offer a superior user interface to many standard applications. Someday Web applications will rule the world, but for now there are still some pesky Windows applications that are not available as a Web app.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Desktop
Ultimately, you're connected to resources by IP address, not machine name. When working at home the other day, I found that stale DNS entries can make this connection mechanism yield interesting results when connecting to your desktop PC via TS Gateway. Although the set of circumstances that led to this error is unusual, it's worth seeing what happened.

Terminal Services Part 2: Sessioning and the RDP Protocol - By: Greg Shields
Distilling down to bare minimums, Terminal Services can be broken down into two halves. First, the "sessioning" half, which is the ability of Microsoft Windows to simultaneously host multiple user sessions on the same server. Each user session is administratively separate from others, with its own identified processes, threads, and user profiles. Any application installed to a server can be used by a session, with the processes needed by that application invoked as necessary by the session.

Microsoft Terminal Services Part 0 - Introduction - By: Greg Shields
Not long ago, I announced a call for ideas regarding this 52-part series on how to architect, implement, and maintain Microsoft Terminal Services in small environments. A special word of thanks to those who contacted me either through comments or via email to suggest content changes.

Understanding Terminal Services Session Broker Extensibility (Part 2)
In a previous blog post, Christa gave a high level explanation of the extensibility points we introduced to Session Broker (SB) in Windows Server 2008. In this post, we will dive a bit deeper to see how we can use SB Extensibility to build our own load balancing logic.

Terminal Services 2008 v Citrix XenApp, reasons why an initial investment in a Citrix XenApp platform will set the stage for a dynamic and robust application delivery infrastructure
I know this has been done to death over the past few years, but since Citrix have released Citrix XenApp 5.0 on Terminal Services 2008, I thought it may be worth while posting an article on the key infrastructure benefits that Citrix XenApp has to offer. If you are new to the application delivery market place and want to learn a little more about how these 2 products differ then this article may assist you in your future decision making.

Fallback Printer Drivers in RDP and Terminal Server Sessions
Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection provides the ability for users to use the printers installed on their local computer within a Terminal Server session. This behavior is enabled by default, and can be changed in MSTSC (the Remote Desktop Connection client) in Options, Local Resources tab, Printers.

How to Remove Terminal Server Licenses From A Remote Desktop (RDP) Client
If an unlicensed client connects to a Terminal Server for the first time, the Terminal Server issues the client a temporary Terminal Server Client Access License (CAL) token. After the user has logged into the session, the Terminal Server instructs the License Server to mark the issued temporary Terminal Server CAL token as being validated. The next time the client connects, an attempt is made to upgrade the validated temporary Terminal Server CAL token to a full Terminal Server CAL token.

How to Install and Configure Terminal Services (TS) Gateway

Terminal Services Easy Print Explained
At the end of Wednesday's session in London, we got round to Terminal services easy print. For those who weren't there, Easy Print is a mechanism for re-directing printers through the Terminal Services Client (MSTSC.EXE aka Remote Desktop Connection). Trying to match printers up between different OSes - say 32-bit XP and 64 bit Server 2008 sounds like a driver nightmare.

Blast from the Past: Understanding Terminal Server's Permissions Compatibility Options
When installing a terminal server, the very first configuration option is an important security decision. The person installing terminal server is given a choice about "permissions compatibility." For Windows 2000, this decision is presented as "Permissions compatible with Windows 2000 Users" or "Permissions compatible with Terminal Server 4.0 Users." Windows 2003 presents the choice as "Full Security" or "Relaxed Security." This decision lays the foundation of the rest of your NTFS security strategy. It even has the potential to override your own NTFS settings, so understanding it is very important.

How to prevent users from accessing a desktop on Microsoft Terminal Services when using RemoteApps

How To: Extend the Terminal Services Session Broker to Support Desktop Virtualization (Part 1)
Terminal Services is both a collection of features and a platform for the TS team's independent software vendor (ISV) partners. As a platform, we want to make sure that our components can be easily extended to support our partners' vision of what Terminal Services can do-and we want to be sure that people know about those extensibility points.
