What makes up a true hybrid cloud infrastructure?
When talking about cloud computing, we will usually find two perspectives: those who believe in the concept of “private cloud computing”, and those who don’t. The people that don’t believe in the private cloud think that only on the public cloud can the benefits of cloud computing - unlimited scalability, pay-per-use, increased scalability - be fully realized. On the other side, those who believe in the private cloud feel that the potential risks of the public cloud outweigh its benefits, but that their own internal infrastructure can benefit from being more cloud-like.

Complexity surrounds us. Often, we are used to it. Driving a car is a complex operation, but after practice, we hardly notice. When we work on a task, we leverage tools to perform that task more efficiently or more effectively. With complexity, we leverage abstraction to deal with the complexity. As an example, a backup policy is an abstraction–we can add hosts, configure a schedule, or set targets for the data within the policy construct. We might organize backup policies by importance, geography, or some other criteria to manage complexity of the backup landscape.

Clearing Things up in the Cloud – a PCI Tale
Back in mid-February, the people who help control security of credit card data, the PCI Standards Console, did us all a favor. They clarified something that technically, should make handling credit cards in, around and through “the cloud” more secure. They released the document called, “PCI Cloud Computing Guidelines.” Certainly, clarification was required. Before this document, if you used a Cloud Service Provider (CSP), you couldn’t be sure whether you had to have a separate audit for them, or if your audits covered everything. It was nebulous, to say the least.

Defense in Depth in a Hybrid Cloud Scenario – Main Considerations
In the Security Issues in the Hybrid Cloud document that our team published in 2011 we stated that “when securing a hybrid cloud system, you should consider all of the factors for both the public and private cloud.” While this statement is still true, the approach to securing a hybrid environment might not be the same as when you are planning your private cloud security. In a hybrid cloud scenario you can still leverage the major considerations for private cloud security, combined with public cloud security considerations. However on top of that you need to address the different threat landscape that will be introduced by this mixed environment. One way to tackle these concerns in a hybrid cloud scenario is by leveraging and old but relevant security concept called defense in depth.
