The idea of creating a baseline open source platform for both public and private clouds has gathered huge momentum, attracting all manner of vendors, customers, developers, and hangers-on. OpenStack Summit: SDN Switches Become Low Cost Linux Boxes?
The VAR Guy is at OpenStack Summit and he's starting to drink the Kool-Aid. Customers like Best Buy, Comcast and Hubspot say they are deploying the cloud computing platform. But now, the conversation is shifting to networking in the cloud -- a software defined networking (SDN) primer. Leading the conversation: Ben Cherian, chief strategy officer at Midokura, a startup focused on network virtualization. His key point: SDN (using Overlay Solutions) will allow switches to be far more like commodity Linux servers -- giving customers the ability to scale and manage their networks far more effectively.

Red Hat Steals the Show at OpenStack Summit, Approves $300M Buyback Program
Red Hat’s been busy today, dominating hashtag streams related to the OpenStack Summit, an annual event taking place in Portland this week. Most recently, the company’s board of directors authorized $300 million in common stock repurchases “from time to time on the open market or in privately negotiated transaction”. This new program replaces the previous $300 million fund, which was completed on February 28 at an average price of $49.15 per share for a total of 3.6 million shares. That adds up to $179 million.

PayPal's 'rip and replace' of VMware for OpenStack much ado about nothing
For the past week, a story reported on Business Insider and other publications has caused quite a stir with its statements that PayPal -- and perhaps even its parent company eBay -- is "ditching" VMware in favor of OpenStack. Some media outlets reported that 80,000 servers at PayPal were getting an overhaul with OpenStack technology rather than remaining with VMware.
