Memory Management and Compression in VMware vSphere 4.1
With vSphere 4.1, VMware released a great new feature called Memory compression. At first, after reading the release notes I thought memory compression was just one step before swapping to disk would occur. However, after reading the whitepaper “Understanding Memory Resource Management in VMware ESX 4” I learned some more details I want to share with you. For the full understanding do read the whitepaper as this post is a quick summary of how memory compression works, while the whitepaper gives you an in-depth view on memory management and also gives a lot of performance info on these techniques.

Guest Failover Clustering with VMware
This blog discusses running a Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC) in a Virtual Machine (VM) on top of a VMware host.Running a cluster in a virtualized environment is commonly referred to as "Guest Clustering".Guest Clustering enables health monitoring of applications running within a VM, as well as application mobility to allow applications to failover from within one VM to another (for example, to allow patching the guest operating system).It is supported by Microsoft to run Failover Clustering in a virtualized environment; however the support policy varies for different guest OS versions.

One of the caveats the vSphere 4.0 was the vCenter Converter Client. The one bundled with vCenter 4.0. Did not do the P2V with as a destination having thin provisioned disks. In that time, you had actually two choices.

Upgrading to VMware SRM 4.1 - including upgrading to vSphere VirtualCenter 4.1
This is more accurately referred to as migration since we are moving from a 32-bit host operating system, to a 64-bit operating system. The steps below will help you move from a SRM 4.0 / VC 4.0 environment where Site Recovery Manager (SRM) and VC are co-located (although that doesn't impact this process much if they are not) and SQL remote. I will try to point out useful information along the way to help in other migration scenarios.
