New Storage Enhancements in VMware vSphere 5.1U1
vSphere 5.1 Update 1 is now available. VMware View Desktop plugin for vSphere Web Client
Today I installed the VMware View Desktops Plug-in on the vSphere Web Client. This plugin is a Technical Preview included with Horizon View 5.2. After installing this plugin you can use the vSphere Web Client to search for a View Desktop user and the Web Client will show the virtual desktop(s) that the user is logged on to. You can use this tool to troubleshoot issues that may arise with an end user’s virtual desktop. If a user calls in with a problem, you can immediately jump to the user’s VM and troubleshoot from there.

VROOM!: Virtualized Hadoop Performance with vSphere 5.1
In an earlier paper on a small seven-host cluster it was shown that Hadoop can be virtualized with little overhead, and that better-than-native performance can be achieved with the right configuration. However, the reasons for the observed performance behavior were not well understood. Recently, this work was refreshed with a larger cluster of 32 high-performance hosts running VMware vSphere® 5.1. The performance of native and several virtual configurations was compared for three applications.

Veeam 7 Tape Support
Veeam has announced another killer feature for their upcoming product – Veeam Backup & Replication 7. The feature is called Backup to Tape. This was one of the major feature which was missing, compared to traditional backup products for physical environments. As devices, all tape devices (Tape Libraries, Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL), or Standalone Drives) which normally appear in the device manager, will be available for backup or archive.
