THE ONLY PROGRAMME IN MY TASK WINDOW THAT DOES NOT HAVE A "REMOVE" TAB (when selected and highlighted) IS THE JAVA AUTO UPDATE!
BUT I STILL GET THOSE PESKY REMINDERS AND MY PC HAS SLOWED UP.
ANY SUGGESTIONS!
THANKS,
BRIAN

This also removes the update tab from the Java control panel.

On Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy
"EnableJavaUpdate"=dword:00000000

Hi Doug. I also like to remove the update tab from the java console with the following. So I basically have 2 lines for my Java .reg. The one you have and this one...

"EnableJavaUpdate"=dword:00000000

There is one other thing that is good to do is remove the Java Update Scheduler from the "Run" key.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"SunJavaUpdateSched"=-

you are correct.  This tweak needs to be disabled, not enabled.  I have updated the post to reflect the correct tweak.   The document will be updated to Beta 4 later this week.  Everyone is giving us great feedback...  I have tons on suggestions sitting in my email too.   So, keep em coming!!

Hello Doug.  A couple of things I noticed here.  Firstly the text above & in the PDF refers to an Internet Explorer setting (copied & pasted from previous paragraph I think).  Secondly, the recommended setting to turn off automatic updates is 0, not 1, isn't it?

Turn off Java Automatically Update

The following registry tweak turns off the automatic update feature in the Sun Java Runtime Environment.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy

Value Name: "EnableJavaUpdate"

Data Type: DWORD

Value Data: 0 = Disabled, 1 = Enabled

Recommended .reg file text:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft\Java Update\Policy] "EnableJavaUpdate"=dword:00000000
