With the recent release of VMware ESX 3.5 / Virtual Center 2.5 and their Virtual Infrastructure 2.5 Client, VMware dropped 64-bit support, i.e., the ability for the VI2.5 client to be installed on a 64-bit operating system. In fact, I wrote about this problem upon finding it a few weeks back in my post, VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client 2.5 Does Not Support 64-Bit Workstations. Without 64-bit support I had to find a workaround so I could access my VMware VI3 environment from my handy dandy dual 24" monitors and dual QUAD core with 8 GB of RAM and 64-Bit Windows Vista Workstation After all, with a machine like this, there was no way I was going to run it from inside a local VM or from one of my 15" or 17" laptops.

Microsoft is a huge company with a vast number of products. Licensing can be, to say the least, confusing. The virtualization environment has been particularly challenging in obtaining clarification around licensing. This is probably due, in part, to the fact that Microsoft has previously not viewed virtualization as an alternative to physical computing. We've advised our clients on licensing issues according to our best educated guess – but have been unable to get written confirmation from Microsoft.

Microsoft Virtual PC and Microsoft Virtual server do not have a functionality to increase a storage capacity of a the virtualization file format, Virtual Hard Disk (VHD). At the same time it is quite easy to underestimated storage requirements of a virtual machine. This problem may be especially annoying for fixed VHDs, used due to improvement in performance they offer, since it is not desirable to allocate too much storage space for them from the beginning. The standard solution for this problem used to be using Ghost inside of the guest OS to create an image, and restoring the image to a bigger, newly created VHD, attached to the same virtual machine. This procedure sure works, but it is painfully slow and laborious manual process.

A few months ago I wrote an article detailing how Citrix CEO's decision to buy XenSource was one of the greatest moves in IT history. In that article I also threw out a teaser stating that I thought Microsoft would announce they would buy Citrix a day or two before VMware's VMworld conference. Well, it is a few days before VMworld and I must admit I was starting to think I would have to write that there would be no deal and to eat a bit of crow, but today my inbox lit up with rumors. I even heard the rumor on my favorite podcast, Tech 5 with John C. Dvorak.

The most common solution people find is to use the "Other Install Media" template, insert the distribution installation CD, and find that the mouse cursor doesn't work when they boot into X11. The reason for this is that they are using the hardware-assisted emulation mode of installing Linux. In this mode (dubbed "HVM"), all input and output is emulated, and in particular the mouse interface uses the USB tablet interface. If the distribution doesn't include a driver for USB tablets, then no mouse will appear.

As like most of us in the virtualization world, I was excited about the release of VMware ESX 3.5 and Virtual Center 2.5! As soon as I could, I went out and downloaded the code and upgraded my lab’s servers only to find that I had a problem. When I installed the upgrade, the VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client required for ESX 3.5, it popped up the most distressing message box, "This product can be installed only on 32-bit operating systems".

Microsoft Acquires Softricity Application Virtualization Company

Will this Result in a Paradigm Shift in How We Manage and Deploy Applications in the Future? Today Microsoft announced they will buy application virtualization software provider Softricity. Softricity are the pioneers of the on-demand virtual application computing model for application management and deployment. For those of you new Softricity, their SoftGrid solution changes the paradigm of how applications are run and managed, through true virtualization of the application. Their solution allows for applications to be completely insulated from the operating system and from each other. With SoftGrid there is no writing to the registry or to where DLLs are stored and there is no need for extensive regression testing. As a result, the OS is kept completely clean. Just as VMware and Microsoft machine virtualization don't install operating systems on to hardware; true application virtualization makes it so that software doesn't get installed on to the operating system.

It is amazing how frequently we hear IT managers talk about deploying blade servers as an integral component of their new virtual infrastructures - as if there were an obvious synergy between VMware and blade server architectures. The opposite, in fact, is nearly always the case. There are three situations in which it makes sense to use blade servers in a physical (aka 1.0) data center: a limitation of data center space, the need to hot swap blade servers and a desire to simplify cable management.

VMware has just made VMware ESXi “free”. Citrix makes a big deal out of the fact that its Xen hypervisor is “free”. Microsoft’s Hyper-V is included in Windows Server 2008, so it is “free”. However, none of these products is really free; you will pay for all of them in various ways.

How to Manually "P2V" a Windows Server in a XEN VM Instance

Xen doesn't officially offer a P2V solution for migrating existing physical Windows instances into XEN VMs. Their answer is a link to two vendors that offer XEN support for their P2V products. Both companies, however, charge a few hundred bucks per-migration, which makes it a bit expensive for the one-off migrations here and there (in both vendors' defense, the P2V functions aren't the main purpose of their products). I've used the following steps to perform migrations of Dell-based Windows 2003 Server instances into XEN virtual machines simply using NTBackup, without having to purchase any "P2V" tools/licenses.

In fact, today I wrote a post on the Thin.net group that I thought Softricity would be bought by the end of 2006 but it might just turn out that they will be picked up by the end of the week.

VMware to Add Seamless Windows (Unity) Support to VMware Workstation 6.5

It was only a matter of time and now we know it will happen sooner rather than later. VMware's Christian Hammond announced VMware will be releasing "Unity" support in VMware's Desktop Virtualization solution, Workstation 6.5. Unity is a feature that VMware first included in their VMware Fusion for the Mac product.

The amazing Andrew Kutz just released the 1.0 version of his VMware Storage VMotion plug-in called SVMotion. SVMotion is a VMware VirtualCenter 2.5 plug-in that extends provides an integrated, graphical tool that can be used to invoke storage VMotion (SVMotion) operations. Basically all you need to do is select the virtual machine who's storage you wish to VMotion and click to tell it which datastore you wish to move it to. SVMotion does the rest. It is a must have utility for anyone running VMware ESX with VirtualCenter 2.5!
