Ok, I was just going to log in and play around and setup another AppController to verify some thoughts around a customer case in our EnvokeIT environment. And what did I do? I just opened my lovely Macbook Air (no one will ever take that one from me!!) and thought I would connect into our internal EnvokeIT lab environment and decided for some reason to connect over SSL VPN this time rather than running everything on the internally published desktop.

One excellent feature of Citrix NetScaler that is often overlooked is SSL Offload. This is especially prevalent in the MPX series appliances, as they all include a Cavium SSL accelerator card, this card has the ability to handle SSL encryption/decryption cycles using a hardware card, rather than consuming valuable CPU resources. The VPX can have the SSL offload feature enabled also, however as there is no Cavium card, the SSL offload performance is not as high as an MPX appliance.

Smartcards are the primary mode of authentication in most of the secure environments like Defense, Financial, Banking and some of the Research organizations. In case of Smartcard the user is not expected to remember his password or token thus the authentication flow should work end to end. For example if we authenticate using Smartcard to the most front ending authentication point, the authentication token needs to be passed to every layer in the infrastructure which expects the token. If the pass through mechanism is not proven then the end to end authentication flow will break resulting into poor end user experience.
