I recently got asked a question – how can I tell if all my Microsoft servers are being Splunked? Interesting question and one that takes a little bit of effort. But we have all the bits, so let’s take a look at what it would take to answer that question. First off, let’s assume that by “Is a Server being Splunked?”, we mean that the server in question has a universal forwarder on it, is hooked into a deployment server, and is sending events to an indexer. All these bits need to have the events land within the same environment.

I was talking to one of our Sales Engineers, Bert Hayes, the other day about using Splunk for computer forensics. Bert formerly was a Splunk customer at a large university in the southern U.S. where he used Splunk for security….he really knows his stuff in this area. Anyhow, Bert mentioned to me how he used to use Splunk for computer forensics and pointed me to a great blog that he found helpful on the topic. Seeing the Future of Cybersecurity in Action

On March 14th I presented an overview of Splunk to contestant finalists at the CyberPatriot V National Finals Competition at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland to approximately 125 – 130 students. Created by the Air Force Association (AFA), the Cyber Patriot competition was created as a response to the critical need for cyber professionals in the workforce by enhancing high school students’ knowledge of careers in cyber security, technology, engineering, and math disciplines. Splunk was a Diamond level sponsor of the event. This meant that for the first time in the history of the competition a proprietary piece of software allowed as part of the competition and was loaded onto the laptops provided to the finalists. Participants in this year’s competition were from national Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs as well as Junior Reserve Officer Training (JROTC) programs

A few weeks ago I was fortunate to be in the room at the SC Magazine U.S. Awards in San Francisco where Splunk Enterprise was selected the “Best SIEM Solution” in the 2013 SC Magazine U.S. Awards, winning a competitive category containing five other SIEM vendor finalists. It was a Readers Trust Award where SC Magazine readers, experienced IT professionals, cast the votes.

With Citrix AG and CSG going away, how far can you get with NetScaler VPX

If you are following Citrix’s networking product line I guess that you are already familiar with a fact that Citrix has finally decided to “End of Life” the Access Gateway product line in 2014. While we can debate for hours if this decision makes sense or not, from purely field perspective I don’t believe it will be a life changer. The NetScaler product line is absolutely capable of addressing almost all AG use cases. The only exception might be an AG + AAC setup in some measure, but let’s be honest; AG+ AAC setup pushed to its limits is definitely a rare occurrence these days.
